Piano & Theory / Composition Lessons
Eclectic Studies Built on a Solid Foundation
Dr. Dave Flippo's 25 years of teaching and exploration offer custom made lessons from beginning to advanced levels a wide array of styles : traditional classical, blues and boogie, jazz and contemporary jazz, gospel, contemporary / popular music (60s' to the present), Broadway and musicals, ragtime and anything else you're into. Pick from one or more of the focuses below and we can build from there ~
-Jazz and Blues - all levels. Learn to visualize and feel chord voicings and scales that are the basis for Jazz and Blues. Build improvisation skills by creating rhythms and shapes over fundamental progressions and learning to "loosen up" and vary your ideas as you play.
Traditional Classical Piano - begins with building a solid technique, reading skills in both notation and rhythm and leaning to make a beautiful tone at the piano. It focuses on interpretation, leaning good fingering and practice stills Aside from the classical repertoire from the Baroque to the present, arrangements of contemporary popular music, musicals, folk and ragtime can be added in according to the student's interests. Learning chords is part of these lessons and more in depth theory and anlysis can be added if desired by the student.
-Theory and Composition - these lessons reinforce and expand a students musical theory base and turn them onto different technique from classical , ethnic music and popular music. Because Dave has studied classical compositional styles as well as jazz and popular styles, it is often exciting to see the common ground that exists between them. Of course, the primary focus is looking and developing compositions by the students including assigning students to write in various styles they are introduced to.
